WORD FINDER FIELD GUIDE
Anagrams with repeated letters
Two E’s are two separate tiles. A repeated-letter anagram has to respect both the letters you have and how many times each one appears. Count first, then rearrange.
Start with a letter inventory
For LETTER, the inventory is E × 2, L × 1, R × 1 and T × 2. A full anagram must use exactly those six tiles. TELLER does not fit: it needs two L’s, but the rack contains only one. Having the same length and familiar letters is not enough.
By default, our solver also returns shorter words made from some of your tiles. TREE fits LETTER because it needs two E’s, one R and one T; the L and second T are unused. Select Use every tile in my rack when the puzzle requires a full anagram. The original word can still appear in the results.
Try a full repeated-letter anagram
- Enter steer in Your letters: E × 2, R × 1, S × 1 and T × 1.
- Select Use every tile in my rack and choose Find words.
- Checked matches include reset, steer, terse and trees. Each uses precisely the same five tiles. These are examples, not an exhaustive list.
Use meaning to choose among candidates. A clue about plants with trunks points toward trees; a clue meaning “set again” points toward reset. The solver checks letters, not the meaning of your clue.
Includes letters is different from Contains this sequence
Includes letters checks counts in any order. With rack letter and Includes ee, a result needs two E’s somewhere in it. Letter and tree fit. Contains this sequence requires adjacent letters in that exact order. With Contains ee, tree fits but letter does not, because its E’s are separated.
Try LETTER with Includes ee Compare Contains ee
Includes does not supply extra tiles. Asking for Includes ll with rack letter still cannot produce teller: the rack has only one L. With a blank, letter? can supply that second L, but it will leave a T unused when forming teller. If Use every tile is enabled, that six-letter result no longer fits the seven-tile rack.
Do repeated tiles create duplicate answers?
Swapping the two E tiles in STEER does not create a different spelling. For five distinct tiles there are 5! = 120 orders. Dividing by 2! for the repeated E gives 60 distinct arrangements. For LETTER, 6! ÷ (2! × 2!) = 180 distinct arrangements because E and T each repeat. Most arrangements are not dictionary words; those counts are not solver result totals.
You do not need to enumerate every arrangement. Write a small tally beside each letter, cross off tiles as you build a candidate, then compare its spelling with the dictionary.
When a plausible answer is missing
- Check every repeated letter, not just the unique letters.
- Clear stale prefix, suffix, length, Includes, Excludes or Contains filters. All filters intersect.
- Decide whether shorter words are allowed; Use every tile excludes them.
- Use ? or * for a genuinely available blank, not to force a desired answer.
- Check the word-list scope. Missing results do not prove that a spelling is invalid everywhere.
